Emphasis Area – Run-Off-Road Crashes

Strategy Number and Name – Shoulder Rumble Strips

Agency and Jurisdiction – Kansas DOT

Problem(s) Identified -- Kansas found that rolled in rumble strips on asphalt pavement were "healing" and losing their effectiveness.

Goals and Objectives Established – Develop and implement a new policy requiring milled-in rumble strips on all new construction and reconstruction efforts.

Description of Strategy(ies) Implemented – Kansas has revised their rumble strip policy to require that all new rumble strips be milled-in rather than rolled-in. This will affect both concrete and asphalt shoulders. Milled- or formed-in strips will be included in project plans for concrete shoulders. Rumble strips will be removed from plans for asphalt projects, but within a year of new asphalt overlays or construction, each district will let one project which will install milled-in strips on all sections with new pavement in the District.

Summary of Implementation Effort – Will begin in summer, 2001.
