14. Computerized data collection (Electronic Field Data Collection)

To develop an appropriate description of existing conditions for project development work in the corridor, more detailed attribute data was desired for particular properties. Using a pen computer data collection system, DOT environmental specialists conducted field visits to collect digital data tied by GPS to locations on digital aerial photographs. The field data was downloaded immediately into the GIS data base and made available to engineers working on conceptual design, and was retrieved later for use by the environmental specialists for NEPA documentation.
