16. Visual analyses of project phasing for alternative refinement (Simulation)

4-dimension visual simulation was used to analyze freight transfer activities and noise issues at a nearby multi-modal container facility. Planned operations and physical improvements at this facility were modeled for a five-year period to help understand the changes in physical layout of the facility and the amount of traffic that would be generated on the proposed road improvements in the county. Results of noise analysis, matched to the simulated operational conditions, was also integrated in visual form. The combined visual simulation helped planners understand output from the operations and noise models and to better communicate this data to agency staff and the public. This particular simulation model allows the user to select any point in time during the five year period for displaying output. The visual representation of multiple types of data together at various points in time and as a time continuum provided planners and the public valuable insights into the interactions of activities that reviewing tabular model output separately could not provide.
